Symptoms

Importing new video files with VideoDrive (import methods 1 until 4) fails because iTunes refuses to accept the video. This is a current limitation of the new 64-bit version of iTunes 10.4 (or higher) as playback of these videos requires QuickTime, which is only available in 32-bit.

Solution 1

The easiest solution is to run iTunes in 32 bit mode. This is a very simple, one-time process that will cause no limitations.

Solution 2

A second solution is to import the videos with import methods 5 until 8. This will encode the video in native iTunes format and ensures full compatibility with the iTunes ecosystem.

Upgrading to MacOSX (Mountain) Lion? If you use VideoDrive with import methods 5 until 8, there is nothing to worry about. VideoDrive 2.5 and higher will run fine on your Lion installation and produce fully compatible iTunes videos. If you use VideoDrive with import methods 1, 2, 3, 4 or 9, please read this article carefully.

Symptoms

When watching videos in iTunes 10.4 (or higher) on MacOSX Lion, the screen remains black or the following error message appears: “This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes”. This occurs for videos imported previously with import methods 1, 2, 3, 4 or 9.

Solution 1

Run iTunes in 32 bit mode. Your videos will play fine.

Solution 2

Copy the videos with import methods 5 until 8. This will encode the video in native iTunes format and ensure full compatibility with the iTunes ecosystem. For this, take the following steps:

‣Step 1: Select affected videos in iTunes.
‣Step 2: If the videos were imported with import method 4, run the ‘ATV Container Converter’ from the Utilities menu of VideoDrive.
‣Step 3: Go to the VideoDrive Preferences Import tab and choose any other converter than QuickTime X.
‣Step 4: Select import methods 5, 6, 7 or 8 in VideoDrive and click ‘Copy Videos’.
‣Step 5: Wait while your videos are converted into M4V or MP4 files. You can optionally delete the original iTunes videos by selecting them in iTunes, right-clicking them and choosing delete. Make sure you are deleting the MOV-versions, not the M4V/MP4 versions.

Solution specifically for videos added to previous versions of iTunes with Import method 4

You must select all affected videos in iTunes and run the ATV Container Converter Utility (available in the menu bar of VideoDrive). This quick process will re-enable playback of your videos. Due to various changes in iTunes 10.4 (or higher) it is advised to run this utility BEFORE upgrading to iTunes 10.4 (or higher). Make sure you have a backup of affected videos before proceeding.

A note on Perian: Users of import methods 1, 2, 3, 4 and 9 rely on QuickTime codecs to play their videos in QuickTime and iTunes. Perian is most commonly used for a wide variety of video formats (including AVI). Our tests conclude that Perian 1.2.3 is compatible with Mountain Lion.
